The overpass bridging Campus Drive has long been a zone of expression for students at Duke University, yet on Wednesday, October 8, Facilities Management began methodically obscuring the messages of one student group (denoted by the white areas). Several days earlier, the Gothic Queers, Duke's association of gay, lesbian, bisexual, transgendered and questioning students and faculty, had covered the bridge in bright, colorful axioms celebrating homosexuality and honoring the return of National Coming Out Week. Angered by this censorship, the organization returned to the bridge to repaint the white areas. The University apologized but has taken no direct action. |
