Awards & honors at
ibiblio

Another fault likewise much of this kind hath been incident to learned men, which is, that they have esteemed the preservation, good, and honour of their countries or masters before their own fortunes or safeties.

Francis Bacon, 1561-1626
The Advancement of Learning from The Gutenberg Project.

Documenting the American South

Documenting the American South

Documenting the American South (DocSouth) is a digital publishing initiative that provides Internet access to texts, images, and audio files related to Southern history, literature, and culture. Currently DocSouth includes nine thematic collections of books, diaries, posters, artifacts, letters, oral history interviews, and songs. DocSouth recently received the Electronic Lincoln Prize and is a recipient of numerous nationally recognized grants.

The Etree Community

The Etree Community

etree.org is the award-winning leader in lossless digital audio distribution on the Internet. It is a community committed to providing the highest quality live concert recordings in a losslessly-compressed, downloadable format. All of the music on etree.org is free, and 100% legal to download, trade, and burn. Honors received by etree include Jammy awards in 2000 and 2001.

Project Gutenberg

Project Gutenberg.

Project Gutenberg is the internet's oldest best producer of free electronic books. Project Gutenberg is the brainchild of Michael Hart, who in 1971 decided to make famous and important texts freely available to everyone in the world. Since its inception he has been joined by hundreds of volunteers who share his vision. Now, more than thirty years after its humble beginnings, Project Gutenberg houses over 18,000 complete electronic versions of important literary and scientific texts. Project Gutenberg features materials from over 20 languages in dozens of formats, with over 2 million book downloads a month. The project was awarded the prestigious 2002 Stockholm Challenge prize.

Lyceum

The Lyceum Project

The Lyceum project being developed by ibiblio, was originally conceived in a very different form 3 years ago as a community-blogosphere-insta-generator. Several staff and identity rotations later, we set forth in the middle of 2005 to make a powerful and easy to use multi-blog WordPress derivative that could be used for installations with 2 or 200,000 blogs. Users will find the familiar WordPress features and interface that they know and love, and administrators will have the architecture and tools that they need to manage their blog service. Lyceum was recently awarded a grant from The Frances C. and William P. Smallwood Foundation.

The Madison County Project

The Madison County Project logo.

Madison County Project examines the tradition of unaccompanied ballad singing in Madison County, North Carolina and how the works of documentary filmmakers, photographers, and academics have influenced that tradition. The story unfolds through the historical works of John Cohen, Rob Amberg, and Harvey Wang as well as the voices of today's ballad singers such as Sheila Kay Adams, Donna Ray Norton, Denise Norton O'Sullivan, and DeeDee Norton Buckner. Filmed in North Carolina. The film has been selected for multiple regional festivals and academic conferences as well as winning the Audience Choice Award at the 2005 Asheville Film Festival.

Folkstreams

Folkstreams.net

The mission of Folkstreams.net is to build a national preserve of documentary films about American folk or roots culture. Produced by independent filmmakers, these hard-to-find films give voice to the arts and experience of diverse American groups. Folkstreams.net makes these films easy to find and to see by video-streaming them on the Internet, and also provides in-depth and reliable contextual materials about the subjects and the filmmaking. The site hosts many festival award winning films. The works featured include critically acclaimed films by Academy Award winning filmmakers. Folkstreams is supported by nationally recognized grants from the National Endowment for the Arts, National Endowment for the Humanities, and Institute of Museum and Library Services.
