Almost despite himself, Linus Torvalds started a revolution in September of 1991 with the first version of his Linux kernel software. Since that portentious moment, Linux has grown to be an international economic force. Linux, a broad term that has evolved to represent both the core programming development code and the rapidly proliferating variety of operating system software and software programs, has achieved remarkable success in both educational and corporate environments, and has grown tremendously in popularity since the release of version 0.01 in September 1991. Linux
software has garnered tremendous international interest (and controversy) due to its revolutionary development model (the open source software development model), which removes the proprietary constraints from the software code, and allows users to freely download, copy and make changes to the software. Many users then return this altered code back to the user

The ibiblio Linux Archive
ibiblio has been involved with Linux since its founding in 1992. ibiblio currently houses over 171 gigabytes of Linux programs and documentation, with many of the most popular Linux distributions available at a snap. ibiblio also hosts mirrors of some of the most popular Linux distributions. Research at ibiblio includes methods to make the Linux distributions easier to discover and use through the Linsearch, which utilizes the Linux LSMs. If you prefer, you can view the ibiblio Linux distributions with an ftp view You're also welcome to submit your own Linux distribution or software to keep the ball rolling.

The Linux Documentation Project
The Linux Documentation Project (LDP) is also celebrating an anniversary this month: ten years working on developing free, high quality documentation for the GNU/Linux operating system. The overall goal of the LDP is to provide a collaboratative atmosphere to identify the issues involved in tackling Linux documentation, and to make this documentation freely available. These tasks includes the creation of "HOWTOs" and "Guides" for various Linux programs (many Linux distributions include a complete LDP document set with the installation to help the newcomer as well as the more experienced), with the ultimate goal of establishing a canonical system of documentation for Linux that will be free and easy to use and search. The LDP is essentially a loose team of volunteers with minimal central organization. Anyone who would like to help is welcome to join in this effort.

The Open Source Research Team
The UNC Open Source Research Team (OSRT) was created to provide an outlet for research into information sharing communities and their accompanying digital archives. Many of these communities revolve around the creation of computer software based on the Open Source development model, and while OSRT is very interested in these types of communities, it also seeks to extend its research into other information-sharing communities who model their behaviors on those of the Open Source Software movement. OSRT supports these research goals by publishing and distributing quantitative and qualitative studies of content contributions and contributors; by helping to facilitate experimental advanced distributions of Open Source resources; by maintaining and managing Open Source archives; by enhancing methods for the searching and retrieval of archived resources; by designing and implementing metadata standards for documentation searching and retrieval; through the hosting of Open Source projects; and by mirroring and distributing Open Source resources.

SourceForge is the world's largest Open Source software development site, providing free hosting to thousands of projects. Sourceforge currently hosts over 60,000 software projects and has over 600,000 registered users, and has rapidly become the main source for individuals and businesses to find the Open Source software they need. Sourceforge started in November of 1999, and ibiblio has been a Sourceforge mirror site almost since the beginning.

LinuxFocus
LinuxFocus is a free, international online Linux magazine. The magazine is hosted by the Linux Documentation Project and is managed and produced by Linux volunteers, fans and developers. LinuxFocus features articles on system administration, hardware, applications, and kernel news, and is currently published in English, Chinese, Arabic, Dutch, French, German, Italian, Korean, Portuguese, Polish, Russian, Spanish, and Turkish.

The Linux Gazette
The Linux Gazette, another publication of the Linux Documentation Project, is an online magazine dedicated to two simple ideas: first, that Linux should be just a little more fun; and second, that sharing ideas and discoveries is an important part of the Linux ethos. The Gazette is a compilation of basic tips, tricks, suggestions, ideas and short articles about Linux designed to make using Linux fun and easy, and includes contributions freely provided by a growing number of authors. The Linux Gazette is now being published with the assistance of the Linux Journal, and through a number of mirror sites it is available in Chinese, French, German, Italian, Japanese, Korean, Portuguese, Russian and Spanish.
