Will The Circle Be Unbroken

This is a hymn written in 1907 by Ada R. Habershon with music by Charles H. Gabriel. There is a later version written by the Carter family used as a funeral hymn.

I remember singing that version at the wedding ceremony of Rita Coolidge and Kris Kristofferson in Malibu – 1973

Lyrics:
[G] There are loved ones in the glory
[C] Whose dear forms you often [G] miss
When you close your earthly [Em]story
[G] Will you join them in [D] their [G] bliss?

CHORUS: [G] Will the circle be unbroken
[C] By and by, [G] by and by
Is a better home [Em] a-waiting
[G] Om the sky Lord [D] in the [G] sky?

In the Joyous days of childhood
Oft they told of wondrous love
Pointed to the dying Saviour
Now they dwell with Him above
CHORUS:
You can picture happy gatherings
Round the fireside long ago
And you think of tearful partings
When they left you here below
CHORUS:
One by one their seats were emptied
One by one they went away
Now the family is parted
Will it be complete one day?
CHORUS:

KumBaYa

KumBaYa is a spiritual that originated in Angola. It means Come By Hear Lord.
Lyrics:

[G] Kum Ba Ya my Lord [Am] Kum Ba [D]Ya
[G] Kum Ba Ya my Lord [C] Kum Ba [G]Ya
[C] Oh [G] Lord [D] Kum Ba [G] Ya

Someone’s singing Lord Kum Ba Ya X3
Oh Lord Kum Ba Ya

Someone’s dancing Lord Kum Ba Ya X3
Oh Lord Kum Ba Ya

Someone’s praying Lord Kum Ba Ya X3
Oh Lord Kum Ba Ya

Amazing Grace

John Newton, a former slave trader wrote “Amazing Grace” following Christian conversion after a near death experience
during a sea voyage.

Happy New Year 2019!!!

Lyrics:
Amazing Grace, How sweet the sound
That saved a wretch like me
I once was lost, but now am found
T’was blind but now I see

T’was Grace that taught my heart to fear
And Grace, my fears relieved
How precious did that grace appear
The hour I first believed

Through many dangers, toils and snares
We have already come.
T’was grace that brought us safe thus far
And grace will lead us home,
And grace will lead us home

Amazing grace, Howe Sweet the sound
That saved a wretch like me
I once was lost but now am found
T’was blind but now I see

C B7 Em

G D

Haste, haste, to bring him laud

C B7 Em

The Babe, the Son of Mary.

Why lies He in such mean estate,
Where ox and ass are feeding?
Good Christian, fear; for sinners here
The silent Word is pleading.

So bring Him incense, gold and myrrh
Come, peasant, King to own Him;
The King of Kings salvation brings
Let loving hearts enthrone him.

Dives And Lazarus

This is a story Jesus told about a rich man and a beggar. They both died and the beggar was comforted while the rich man suffered in eternal flames.

Luke 16:19–31, New International Version:
“
19“There was a rich man who was dressed in purple and fine linen and lived in luxury every day. 20At his gate was laid a beggar named Lazarus, covered with sores 21and longing to eat what fell from the rich man’s table. Even the dogs came and licked his sores.
22“The time came when the beggar died and the angels carried him to Abraham’s side. The rich man also died and was buried. 23In Hades, where he was in torment, he looked up and saw Abraham far away, with Lazarus by his side. 24So he called to him, ‘Father Abraham, have pity on me and send Lazarus to dip the tip of his finger in water and cool my tongue, because I am in agony in this fire.’
25“But Abraham replied, ‘Son, remember that in your lifetime you received your good things, while Lazarus received bad things, but now he is comforted here and you are in agony. 26And besides all this, between us and you a great chasm has been set in place, so that those who want to go from here to you cannot, nor can anyone cross over from there to us.’
27“He answered, ‘Then I beg you, father, send Lazarus to my family, 28for I have five brothers. Let him warn them, so that they will not also come to this place of torment.’
29“Abraham replied, ‘They have Moses and the Prophets; let them listen to them.’
30“‘No, father Abraham,’ he said, ‘but if someone from the dead goes to them, they will repent.’
31“He said to him, ‘If they do not listen to Moses and the Prophets, they will not be convinced even if someone rises from the dead.’”

Lyrics:

Guitar tuned down to D

1. [Em] As it fell out [G] upon a [D] day,
[G] Rich Dives made a [D] feast,
[Em] And he invited [G] all his [D] friends,
[G] And gentry of the [Em] best.

2. [G] Then Lazarus laid him [D] down and [G] down,
And down at Dives’ [D] door;
[Em] Some meat, some drink, [G] brother [D] Dives,
[Em] Bestow [D] upon the [Em] poor.

3. Thou’rt none of my brother, Lazarus,
That lies begging at my door;
Nor meat nor drink will I give to thee,
Nor bestow upon the poor.

4. As it fell out upon a day,
Poor Lazarus sickened and died;
There came two Angels out of Heaven,
His soul therein to guide.

5. Rise up, rise up, brother Lazarus,
And come along with me;
There’s a place in Heaven prepared for thee,
To sit upon an Angel’s knee.

6. As it fell out upon a day,
Rich Dives sickened and died;
There came two serpents out of Hell,
His soul therein to guide.

7. Rise up, rise up, brother Dives,
And come along with me;
There’s a place in Hell prepared for thee,
To sit upon a serpent’s knee.

8. Then Dives looked with burning eyes,
And saw poor Lazarus blest;
One drop of water, Lazarus,
To quench my flaming thirst!

9. Oh! were I but to live again,
For the space of one half hour,
I would make my peace and so secure
That the Devil should have no power

Rock A My Soul

Rock A My Soul is a classic African-American spiritual originating in the southern United States. It refers to a parable in Gospel of Luke of the rich man and Lazarus. The rich man had his reward in life but the poor beggar Lazarus suffered greatly. In death Lazarus went to enjoy the comfort of the bosom of Abraham and the rich man was tortured in Hades.

The counterpoint of the two choruses is just for fun. You gotta go in through the door.

Lyrics:

CH 1)

[E] Rock a my soul in the bosom of Abraham
[B7] Rock a my soul in the bosom of Abraham
[E] Rock a my soul in the bosom of Abraham
[B7] Lord rock a my [E] soul

CH 2) Overlap

[E] So high you can’t get over it
[B7] So low you can’t get under it
[E] So wide you can’t get around it
[B7] You gotta go in through the [E] door

[E] I would not be a sinner
And I’ll tell you the reason [B7] why
If by chance my Lord should [A] call me
[B7] Then I wouldn’t be ready to [E] die

Why don’t you rock a my soul
In the bosom of Abraham
Rock a my soul in the bosom of Abraham
Rock a my soul in the bosom of Abraham
Oh rock a my soul
Why don’t you rock a my soul

I went down in the valley
To find me and place to pray
I felt my soul so happy
That I sang my prayers all day

Lonesome Valley

Classic 19th century spiritual, perhaps referring to the 4th verse of the 23rd Psalm: Yea, though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil: for thou art with me; thy rod and thy staff they comfort me. The song is on page 53 of John Wesley Work’s treasure trove of old songs published in 1915. My favorite recording of it is by Pete Seeger.

Lyrics:

[G] You gotta walk that lonesome valley
You gotta [D] walk it by [G] yourself
[C] Ain’t nobody else gonna walk it [G] for you
You gotta walk that lonesome [D] valley by [G] yourself

My mother walked that lonesome valley
She had to walk it by herself
Ain’t nobody else could walk it for her
She had to walk that lonesome valley by herself

Oh you gotta walk that lonesome valley
You gotta walk it by yourself
Ain’t nobody else can walk it for you
You gotta walk that lonesome valley by yourself

My father walked that lonesome valley
He had to walk it by himself
Ain’t nobody else could walk it for him
He had to walk that lonesome valley by himself

You gotta walk that lonesome valley
You gotta walk it by yourself
Ain’t nobody else can walk it for you
You gotta walk that lonesome valley by yourself

Oh Jesus walked that lonesome valley
He had to walk it by himself
Ain’t nobody else could walk it for him
He had to walk that lonesome valley by himself

Oh you gotta to walk that lonesome valley
You gotta walk it by yourself
Ain’t nobody else can walk it for you
You gotta walk that lonesome valley by yourself

Oh you gotta walk that lonesome valley
You gotta walk it by yourself
Ain’t nobody else can walk it for you
You gotta walk that lonesome valley by yourself

Joy, Joy, Joy, Joy, Down In My Heart

A popular children’s gospel song. I got a lot of joy on April 1, 1978. I married Camilla.

Lyrics:
G POSITION CAPO ON SECOND FRET
[G] I’ve got a Joy, Joy, Joy, Joy, down in my heart
[D] Down in my heart, [G] down in my heart
I’ve got a Joy, Joy, Joy, Joy, down in my heart
[D] Down in my heart [G] today

I’ve got a beautiful wonderful happy feeling down in my heart
Down in my heart, down in my heart
I’ve got a beautiful wonderful happy feeling down in my heart
Down in my heart to stay

[Bm] It’s a whole new way of [Em] living, [Bm] far from the dark of [Em] night
[Bm] I’ll tell you the joy it’s [Em] giving me
[A7] Just walking in the [D] light

I’ve got a peace that passes understanding down in my heart
Down in my heart, down in my heart
I’ve got a peace that passes understanding down in my heart
Down in my heart to stay

It’s a whole new way of living far from the dark of night
I’ll tell you the joy it’s giving me
Just walking in the light

Angels We Have Heard On High

The lyrics for “Angels We Have Heard On High” are a translation of a French song Les Anges dans nos campagnes (literally, “Angels in our countryside”) The melody is a traditional hymn “Gloria” Gloria in Excelsis Deo! (Latin for “Glory to God in the highest”

Merry Christmas 2015 and Vive la France!

Sweetly singing o’er the plain
And the mountains in reply
Echoing their joyous strain
—Chorus—:

[G] Glo-o-o-o-o-o- [C] O-o-o-o-o-o-[G] O-o-o-o-o-o-[D] O-ri-a [G] in Ex-cel-sis De-o![D]

Shepherds, why this jubilee,
Why your joyous strains prolong?
What the gladsome tidings be
Which inspire your heavenly songs?

Chorus

Come to Bethlehem and see
Christ Whose birth the angels sing;
Come adore on bended knee
Christ, the Lord, the newborn King.

Chorus

See Him in a manger laid,
Jesus, Lord of heaven and earth;
Mary, Joseph, lend your aid,
With us sing our Savior’s birth.
