Duke Women's Services has a Big Sister Program. The program, in its 2nd year, was a huge success last year. Subsequently Duke Women's Services has received 37 requests for mentors, with only 15 women volunteering to mentor girls in the program. If more volunteers are not found, the majority of the 10-12 year olds signed up will be turned away. This Volunteer project offers an excellent opportunity for women to establish a warm, genuine relationship with an adolescent. Sessions are geared towards promoting the development of self enriching rather than self defeating behavior in a relaxed, comfortable group setting. Topics to be explored in the weekly sessions will include: self esteem, female sexuality, women's health, and goal setting. Many of the sessions will feature a workshop, i.e.: African Dance and Drumming, or special guest speaker. The sessions will be held Mondays, March 10 through May 12, 6:30-8:30 pm. Dinner is included. Sessions will be held at the Teer House in Durham. For more info please contact Christy Koch at Duke Women's Services: (919)477-2644. |
