What's a Little State-sponsored Terrorism Between Allies?
Sister Dianna Ortiz, an Ursuline nun from Kentucky, was kidnapped in 1989 in Guatemala City and taken to a Guatemalan military facility where she was gangraped and tortured. The abductors videotaped her as they forced her to stab another prisoner. As she was being lowered into a pit filled with dead bodies and rats, the torturers were suddenly stopped by a man speaking Spanish with a gringo accent. The American, "Alejandro," told Sister Ortiz he was taking her to a "friend" in the American Embassy in his vehicle. Before she fled from the vehicle, "Alejandro" told her that she must be quiet about her experiences or the videotape would be released. Ortiz is now a leader in the demand for the full declassification of all US documents bearing on atrocities in Guatemala. |
