UNDER "NEW MANAGEMENT"

My name is Dana, and I am pleased to introduce myself as the new Assistant Manager at Internationalist Books. I am enjoying learning about the store, meeting all of our interesting customers, and discovering lots of cool books. I like how the atmosphere provides a nice combination of excitement and tranquility.

Most recently I worked for Wellspring Grocery but left there disillusioned by changes brought about by the Whole Foods takeover. But before that, I worked for U.S. Public Interest Research Group, helping to run the canvass office in Chapel Hill. There I got a taste for activism, and my first introduction to the Internationalist, as a progressive force in the community.

I was impressed from the start. In addition to filling a void in alternative literature, the Internationalist represents what has been dying in so many landscapes across the country-individuality of place. As a student of urban studies (I studied urban sociology and architecture as an undergrad, and will be taking classes in the City and Regional Planning department at Carolina), I am very concerned about the automobile driven, corporation led conformity that continues to strip communities of their character, over which Simon and Garfunkel lament in their "every town looks the same as" line in the song "Homeward Bound" (I think I'm right about the quote).

In addition to complaining about such things, I spend my time volunteering for groups like the Clean Water Fund and Democracy South, and currently serve on the Carrboro Transportation Advisory Board.

I am very happy to know that the Internationalist exists, and am excited to be a part of it. I'm just waiting for the big rush of text book sales when school starts...
